TRade & ENvironment Database
The TREND database identifies nearly 300 different types of environmental provisions in more than 680 trade agreements. The codebook, with a full description of each coded item, is available here. The complete dataset is available here.
It was built by Jean-Frédéric Morin and his team, thanks to funding provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Center for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and Université Laval's Centre d'études pluridisciplinaires sur le commerce et l'investissement (CEPCI).
It relies on trade agreements provided by the Design of Trade Agreements (DESTA) project.
The German Development Institute has created a online analytic tool, allowing users to explore the TREND database. It is available at www.TRENDanalytics.info
Jean-Frédéric Morin is working on several journal articles, book chapters and policy brief, presenting different aspects of TREND, in collaboration with Andreas Dür and Lisa Lechner (both at University of Salzburg), Joost Pauwely and James Hollway (both at the Graduate Institute, Geneva), Clara Brandi, Axel Berger and Dominique Bruhn (all three from the German Development Institute), and Sikina Jinnah (University of California Santa Cruz).
Citation for the dataset: Morin, JF, A. Dür and L. Lechner (2018), "Mapping the trade and environment nexus: Insights from a new dataset", Global Environmental Politics, vol. 18(1). (replication dossier can be downloaded here)
